La historia de Víctor puede servirnos para comprender mejor uno de los temas de vital importancia en psicología cognoscitiva, el lenguaje. El niño apenas sabe hablar, comunicarse o convivir en una sociedad. Bautizado con el nombre de Víctor, su caso es asumido por el doctor Itard (Truffaut), un médico solitario con una dedicación inquebrantable para integrar al niño en la sociedad. Pero domar al "salvaje" no será tarea fácil e Itard tendrá que trabajar infatigablemente para enseñar a Víctor su lugar en el mundo, aunque tenga que jugarse su reputación en el intento.
